I Think I May Have Had a Chemical Pregnancy

By John Garnett

Hormone levels in the form of HCG are indicative of pregnancy but not conclusive. As a result pregnancy tests can return a false positive also known as a Chemical Pregnancy. Hormone levels fluctuate and with extremely sensitive equipment readings can give false hope for those trying to conceive.

Chemical pregnancies are surprising common, but many women don't realise they've experienced one. As miscarriage of this kind occurs very early in the first trimester, typical signs of pregnancy are not always present and a missed period may not have happened yet, as such most women are unlikely to even take a pregnancy test and won't realise they were even pregnant. As pregnancy tests become more and more sensitive, more women are able to detect a chemical pregnancy.

Chromosome abnormality is believed to be the cause of Chemical Pregnancy. This is not fully understood and Chemical Pregnancy could be due to other factors or a layering of factors with various issues contributing in a small way.

Luteal Phase defects and chromosome deficiency can be attributed to miscarriage together with hormone deificiencies. The latter can be addressed medically.

Suferers of a Chemical Pregnancy should not be concernerd that this may indicate long term problems. Healthy women capable of conception and full term pregnancy can suffer chemical pregnancies. Even women who are concerned after more than one Chemical Pregnancy has occurred can find that treatment can resolve the problem.

These treatments include fibroid surgery, hormones and baby aspirin. If you have had two or more chemical pregnancies it could be a sign of underlying reproductive problem, so it's a good idea to speak with your health care provider or reproductive specialist.

Counselling and communicating effectively with your partner are essential if you are at all concerned. If you want to explore these issues on a confidential basis then you should consult your medical adviser and seek out an online support network.
