November is National Family Caregivers Month in America

By John Adams

All over the country, everyday, caregivers are quietly and selflessly tending to the needs of others. Some of the people they care for are disabled or have limitations because of their age. These almost 66 million people are celebrated in November, during America's National Family Caregivers Month, which was set up by presidential proclamation.

Many caregivers, brave as they are, feel that they are in isolation from all help as they try to maintain their own jobs and health while caring for loved ones, according to Dan Fox, who is President of Right At Home of the Desert. He says that his group understands the exhaustion and feelings that come up when providing home care, making caregivers feel lonely and overwhelmed. It offers no-cost support, programs, and resources that any caregiver could make use of.

Family caregivers can find help and resources through many different organizations and internet sites. Family Caregiver Alliance provides publications to help with the needs of caregivers on all levels, from suggestions to fact sheets to anecdotal stories and newsletters.

National Alliance for Caregiving is a nonprofit coalition of national organizations that connect family caregivers with beneficial information.

There's a core message with which the National Family Caregivers Association approaches you, and that is to believe in your abilities, take care of yourself, ask for help, and know your rights and stand up for them. It's based in Maryland.

There's a federal website for Medicare and Medicaid services where you can get useful data about these governmental resources that can help family caregivers. On it you'll also get links to other sites for organizations and resources that will be invaluable to someone who is doing caregiving.

For a local list of Palm Springs in home caregiver services and organizations, contact county government agencies such as the Health and Human Services Department, Social Services and the Public Heath Department. Local-scale social service departments can also help.

Fox stated that family caregivers should have the support they need for the challenges they're facing. Anybody involved in this work understands that resources and encouragement are required if they are going to deal with their responsibilities as well as maintain their own lives and health. The whole community is asked to give the caregivers they know a pat on the back, a word of gratitude, and an offer of help that lasts beyond Family Caregivers Month.
