Fabric Church Banners Can Add Tremendous Beauty And Color To Any Place Of Worship

By Leigh Bean

Fabric Church Banners (also known as standards or ensigns) are not only beautiful, they also act as an important medium for the core ideas that unite a congregation. Ideas from scripture are made tangible in the form of a standard, and act as a constant reminder of faith. They are also an ancient form of devotional art that are mentioned in the Old Testament.

Places of worship may display ensigns at all times, or they may only display them (or certain ones) on special occasions such as Christmas or thanksgiving. Some may be large and impressive, while others may be small and personal. Designs range from intricate and elaborate, to simple and unpretentious. They may be for indoor use only, or they may on occasion be used outside.

They can be bought ready-made from specialists, or they can be made by those who have the requisite skills. If you choose to make your own, the act of making the banner can be an act or worship in itself. Making this kind of devotional item, something that is filled with religious significance, can be a tremendously satisfying experience.

It should be pointed out that producing an effective ensign is not necessarily that straightforward. It involves using design elements and does require a certain level of skill. It also requires a certain degree of skill with regard to working with materials (cutting, sewing, etc). If you not not have these kind of skills you will need to bring in someone who does.

If you decide to go ahead, you will obviously need to settle on a design. You will need to think about the message you wish to convey, and experiment with some ideas. It may be worthwhile to brainstorm with other members of your congregation and see what you can come up with. Make some preliminary sketches and get an idea of what the finished design will look like.

When experimenting with design ideas, always keep in mind the principle of simplicity. Remember that if the ensign is to hang on a wall, it needs to be legible from a distance. It's lettering should therefore be well-spaced and easy to read. Any imagery, too, should be clear, simple and easy to make out from distance.

Pay attention also to how consistent the design elements are with each other. The colors, fonts, and imagery should all work in harmony to convey the desired message. The fonts should match the emotional content of the text. Likewise, the colors and imagery should match the overall emotion of the main message.

Without a doubt, fabric church banners add a splash of beauty and celebration to any interior. The act of making them is also an act of celebration and should be done in that spirit. Whether you make your own, or decide to have one made by a specialist company, you will be honoring the glory of God in one of the most creative, colorful ways possible.
