Military Spouses Find Education Easy With Online College Courses

By Emilia Canale

In 2009 Congress required the Department of Defense to provide certain benefits for spouses of personnel on active duty. After a trial period this has resulted in the provision of certain military spouse education benefits. Their purpose is just as the title suggests, to help spouses of personnel on Active Duty to enhance their career prospects worldwide.

This means that any intended course must be aimed at a qualification widely accepted in the job market. A list of approved colleges can be found online which offer certain degrees and other approved professional credentials, including the legal, medical and accountancy professions. Permitted expenses include direst costs such as tuition and licensing or credentialing fees.

There are various costs which are excluded in terms of the provisions, such as any fees on application, for membership, or parking and child care expenses. There is a limit of $6000 for this benefit in a lifetime. Unfortunately, the Coast Guard does not fall within the ambit of the DoD and this benefit does not apply.

The major category of spouses who qualify are those of personnel of the different DoD services. In addition, ancillary services such as the National Guard and Reserve are also included in the MSCAA, subject to certain requirements. Those married to qualifying members who have been injured, fallen ill, or even killed would be able to participate, as well.

Postings can change suddenly, so flexibility is important while studying. As a result spouses tend to find schooling easy with online tuition, and this medium is therefore chosen by many. Many of the most suitable courses can be followed through approved distance education colleges.

These military spouse education benefits add a new dimension by enabling husbands or wives to improve their qualifications. The ability to enhance skills and pursue an active career of their own that this provides is a promise of a better life. The spouse will be better able to rise to any challenges.
