Choosing Usage Based Insurance Can Mean Paying Less

By Marty Q. Pfannerstill

Those who are concerned with the impact driving has on pollution and general safety will approve of Usage based insurance. Currently, many Americans own a car and use it on a daily basis. When evaluating clients, monthly insurance providers note the age of a driver and the type of vehicle they are driving, yet both of these factors have little to do with actual driving habits. If people do not feel as if they are well monitored, they are often more likely to disobey, even slightly, in both how much mileage they consume and how closely the rules of the road are being followed.

A different type of insurance can really make a shift in how often a person drives. If every mile has a cost, it is far less likely that someone would make a three minute drive to the grocery store instead of walking. Less driving will mean less gas consumption and less exhaust pollution, both of which could significantly decrease the nation's carbon imprint. Also, those who might have otherwise driven may walk or bike, seeing an enhancement in themselves.

Whatever other considerations the populace may think important, their interests are often more pressing. In individual cases, usage based insurance is also a wise decision. Through telematic advancements various aspects of driving, such as how fast a car is going and where it is, are transmitted. Closer attention is more likely to instill better driving habits.

The adjustment to such close monitoring might be somewhat difficult. There is an asset, however, that may seem even more worth it than safe driving, a better analysis of a driver's history. Monthly coverage can only offer lower rates and perks after a lengthy period of time because driving history is the singular indicator of performance. The situation may be worse for the newly licensed population, who often get presented with high payments for years depending on their age. Through usage based insurance, drivers are assured their good behavior on the road will be noticed and rewarded right away. Being a conscientious driver will quickly mean more affordable coverage, without any age restrictions.

There are not many possibilities for this form of insurance at the moment, but there has definitely been an rise in curiosity where pay-as-you-drive has been concerned. Certain states have begun exploring similar options. The future may demonstrate that this is the safest way to be insured.
