How Christian Banners And Flags In Worship

By Mitzi Fitzgerald

Since the creation of mankind, Christian banners and flags have held a place of reverence. Pagan faiths also followed suit and used them to pay homage to the idols they gave honor to. Nothing can replace the inner strength of faith that people have, but these symbols are used to demonstrate an outward recognition of their faith.

Flags and banners actually have no practical use in religious beliefs. It is simply a manner that that has been chosen to offer praise to the Almighty with sheer abandon. They can be used during special holidays to announce the event that is being celebrated. Both large and small, these items are found throughout the world.

The words banner and flag are considered to be synonymous and they are often used in that manner. Still, there are some basic differences between the two. If you were to mention the flag, most would immediately think of the kind of flag that is displayed on a flagpole. They would not be incorrect but Christian flags are typically smaller in size and can be triangular or rectangular. They are also usually displayed inside a place of worship. The banner is almost always rectangular, and is hung from grommets placed on the top or along an end.

Space is an important factor in ordering these items. Make sure and measure correctly the amount of space that you have to display your pennant during worship services. Height and width are equally important. For some occasions small hand held flags are used so that each attendant at the service can take part in the celebration of the Lord.

These instruments of praise are used by churches all over the world. They are testimony to the ministry that honors and respects the Christian law by which it abides. They are not toys but rather items used as inspiration enabling the followers to be further enlightened.

Countries where religious practices are freely observed, the people sometimes begin to take that liberty for granted. The display of a banner will remind one that it is a liberty not to be taken lightly. We tend to forget that there are areas of the world where people are not quite as fortunate.

From the hundreds of flags and banners there are to choose from, it is possible to have your own design displayed on one or the other. It is not uncommon for a church member with artistic talent to design a devotional phrase or symbol that become beloved by all. It will cost more than the ones that are already made up, but these items last for years and years and can be used many times over.

The church calendar is resplendent with special periods of worship. Christmas and Easter are two of the most popular and well celebrated seasons. Whether your congregation meets inside or outside, Christian banners and flags are used to announce to the general public what the denomination stands for. Let your words and songs of praise ring out for all to hear with these instruments of faith.
