Wedding Wine - The Perfect Accompaniment For Your Perfect Day

By Zack Rhodes

Your wedding is undoubtedly going to be one of the most important days of your life and as such when planning your special day it is imperative to make sure that there is proper wedding wine available for you and your guests. As insignificant a decision as this might appear on the surface, choosing the right wedding wine can be a stressful decision, and there are various factors to consider when making your selection. Chief amongst these of course is your own personal preferences but the time of year should also be a contributing factor, as should be the food (some wines compliment certain foods well and some really do not) and the couple's budgetary constraints.

Before the reception begins in earnest there is generally an hour or so set aside for drinks and cocktails. This will give your wedding guests chance to mingle and will allow stragglers to catch up from the ceremony. Here it is imperative that the right wedding wine is served, as it will mark many guests first impressions of the evening. Red wines that are generally favoured at weddings are merlot, pinot-noir, cabernet-sauvignon and shiraz, and popular white wedding wines are generally chardonnay, Riesling, sauvignon-blanc and pinot-blanc. Rose wine might also be offered as an option at summer weddings.

After the initial drinks hour the wedding guests will traditionally be seated for their dinners and at this point they will require a wedding wine that perfectly compliments the food on offer. As far as what wedding wine goes with what wedding entre, it's generally acknowledged that white wines go well with fish and that red wines go well with meat but there are exceptions that prove the rule.

The most important wedding wine for many should be the champagne that's used to toast the happy couple at the apex of the reception. Of course the wine used doesn't technically need to be 'champagne' as that is the name only given the sparkling wines that are made from grapes grown in that specific region of the French countryside. Indeed many guests might prefer a Spanish Cava or an Italian Prosecco as they can be just as pleasant and are a more cost-effective alternative. The choice (as ever) belongs to the couple.

There is a final wedding wine choice to consider for Christian couples that will be married in church. For the ceremony itself it is important to consider the sacramental wedding wine that will be used to conduct the partaking ritual. This is a ceremony that is designed to represent commitment and unity with others, a perfect reflection of the life you and your beloved are about to share together and the wedding wine that will be used for the occasion will be specially made as a wine to compliment perhaps the most important celebration of your life.
