David Herd and Charles Empson, the early Blenheim pioneers, have founded a vineyard and winery in the foothills of the Southern Alps. The duo proceeded to establish a well reputed grape wine and small winemaking operations.

In early 1970's, one of the New Zealand's biggest wine producers had sought to expand the operations of his winery into the South Island and this had caused Marlborough to be seen as a perfect area for wine-making. Due to the abundant sunshine of the region, its soil types, crisp and cool winters, and long autumn, the world class wines are being produced.

A boutique vintner name Ernie Hunter began promoting the wines overseas due to his decision that the wines being produced in the area were of international quality. The wine exporting began here. Also during this period, the first boutique wineries started to establish themselves.

The tremendous success of these wineries leads the other companies to switch in this kind of business. Many international companies saw the potentials of the Marlborough wine industries.

Now the largest wine growing region in New Zealand, the area has more than 9000 hectares of vineyards. The main varieties grown are Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Merlot, Gewurztraminer and Cabernet Sauvignon.
