Lincolnshire's Newest Recycling Plant - A Breakthrough in the Challenge of Plastic Recycling

By Meg Phillips

The newest recycling plant of Lincolnshire is unquestionably a major breakthrough in the challenge that most of the countries are facing in recycling a variety of mixed plastics.

This £15m facility is established by the Coca-Cola Enterprises and the ECO Plastics. After its inauguration on Thursday, the environment minister Lord Taylor stated that this will be the first recycling plant with the advanced technology that can integrate the processing polymers and rigid plastic. In fact, this plant will also have an additional capacity of processing thousands of tonnes of rigid plastic packaging including some food trays and pots.

To support this project, the local government has also shown their active participation by providing a monetary support of a £1.15m loan towards the growth and extension of the facility. Thus, the plant will have an advanced processing facility exclusively for the recycling, bottle sorting, and processing units for various types of rigid plastics.

After the introduction of the plastic recycling process a decade ago, a number of industries are highly benefited. In fact, half of the plastic bottles are now recycled today. However, there are several other types of plastics including those dark plastic ready meal trays, protective films, and the yoghurt pots that are still difficult to recycle. Also, the new set of strict rules on re-use has also made it evident that no packaging can be reused for food packaging after recycling.

As the rigid plastic recycled waste has a potential issue of contaminating the waste stream, it is very vital that the rigid plastic packaging is properly recycled. It may also affect the environment and the economy in turn, because the process of the non-bottle plastics packaging grows while building lots of pressure on the local authorities to routinely collect the plastic waste.

As per the monthly budget, the plastic recycling is expected to become 42 percent by 2017. Even a government minister had also criticized the fact of low plastic recycling at present. Due to the usage of tons of plastic wastes for landfill, there is a lot of expenditure. In contrast, these plastic wastes can be reused and save a lot of money if they are subjected for recycling.

Recycling of the plastic film is still a concern. However, after the recent research in September 2011, it has been found out that there are new recycling methods for the plastic films. After that, many large retailers have started working to collect clingfilm, bread bags, and plastic wastes to recycle.

Furthermore, this new move has also impressed the environment minister. This makes it evident that there will be an increase in the amount of plastic waste recycling by 15,000 tonnes. In turn, it will again help to protect the environment and save money as many businesses will be benefited by cutting back on the use of the raw materials. Consequently, it will help the recycling industry to grow while helping the UK to become a zero-waste nation one day.
