There Is A Huge Array Of Psychology Jobs Available

By David Yoshikawa

The exposure to new ideas, for most people, happens during their college years. Misconceptions are challenged and, hopefully, you are exposed to a wide variety of people with different experiences that your own. The goal of a core curriculum is more than just putting together a base knowledge, but forcing all majors to be exposed to a variety of disciplines. Many students often change their majors during this period is response to a class like psychology without thinking ahead to whatever psychology jobs they may hold in the future.

That is not to say that the job market is dry for these students, but they should think ahead at the types of industry they want to be in before they graduate. Certain areas like counseling, therapy, and even research demand further schooling in graduate school and come with a more guaranteed form of employment.

Your degree gives you an understanding of human nature that simply doesn't exist with most disciplines and so you can apply that knowledge in interesting ways. The field of advertising lives and dies on its ability to speak to a wide audience, making you invaluable to the marketing team.

Industries that thrive on group dynamics need employees who have taken the time to study human behavior and thinking. The application of this knowledge is virtually limitless and it can surprise many people to find out how influential they can be in product development. Advertising, of course, is dependent on being attractive to a large section of the population.

These jobs are great and varied, but it is safe to say that many students major is psych with an eye towards making a lasting impact through helping people. There are a number of ways to accomplish this outside of the traditional avenues of counseling and therapy. Forensic workers, for instance, can create profiles for offenders that aid law enforcement officials tremendously.

Drug counselors are, unfortunately, always in demand and with the issue of addiction firmly entrenched in society, we need more people willing to take on this demanding job. The intricacies of substance abuse demand therapists that are caring, but firm, and you will have a lasting impact on all of you patients.

Research is another field that many students gravitate towards when they don't have the desire to work in group or one-on-one therapy sessions. The field of neurological research is experiencing a boom right now that shows no signs of slowing down and is in direct response to the leaps made in technology.

Watching a brain while its functioning was simply unheard of until recently and researchers had to infer what areas of the brain were responding to certain stimuli. This is not to say they were guessing, especially since functional MRIs have validated a number of theories. The addition of imaging technology has only made brain research more cutting edge.
