Educational Games For Your Dog

By Alison Heath

The word pet is not something you can always apply to dogs. If there is one person, or in this case an animal, that we can totally rely on for support and companionship it would be our dog. It's not enough that we feed them and give them a place to stay. Keeping them strong and healthy would take some work.

The more time you spend with your dog, the more your will come to appreciate them. Spending time with them, whether for play or work, endears you more to your dog; you can use this time to further reinforce the respect, understanding and communication that exists between the two of you.

Getting your dog to learn neat tricks not just helps him, but you as well; the time spent together can help deepen the bond you share and make it a more enjoyable experience for the both of you.

You can start with Follow The Leader. For the game to work, a group of people and their pets should participate. The object of the game is for the group to skirt around the cones and cans that has been placed on the ground, this trick teaches the dog to follow when they're called. If you want to take it further, you can have the leaders switch places and play the game again from the start.

Hide and Seek is also fun. This is one good way to teach your dog to stay in one place, he'll have to stay where he is until you've had the chance to hide and learn to come to you when you call; this is one fun way to teach him some tricks and also spend some time playing with each other.

Instead of searching for you, let your dog search for the treats you've hidden in various places in the house or the yard.

This would be one good way to practice his hunting skill and to reward him for his efforts as well.

You could also bring your dog with you when you go out for your early morning jog. This way you and your dog can get some exercise and keep both of you physically healthy. Take this time to have some quality time with your dog, play a little Frisbee or fetch the ball; this will get your dog very excited as they try to catch the Frisbee or the ball and it will also teach your dog to focus on an object and fetch it for you.

So you see, you can have some fun with your dog through different activities. It's one great one way to have some fun and teach your dog some manners at the same time; both of you learn something from the experience and your dog becomes much more eager to please his master.
