Where Did The Tradition Of Ring Bearers and Flower Girls Come From?

By Wes Backster

Weddings are steeped in traditions from the generations that have gone before us. Many of these traditions are so old that we might not even know how they started so this article takes a look at how just a couple of these traditions got their start.

During the days of the romans when someone was getting married they would have young girls bring wheat and herbs to the bride and groom. This was done to act as to bless the new couple with a life of prosperity and fertility.

The tradition of the flower girl was carried on through ages and each age and culture added something slightly different to it up until out day. Now flower girls carry flower petals instead of wheat and herbs but even though what they carry has changed the tradition is something that has been around for a long long time.

As far as the tradition of the ring bearer or ring boy goes it does not date back as far as the flower girls but with that being said the tradition is still centuries old. Originally the ring boy was the pageboy during medieval times. The pageboy's responsibilities in those days were to carry the bride's train, prayer book, as well as the rings.

This ring bearer tradition has changed a little through the ages as times have changed and instead of a pageboy the bride and groom now pick a younger boy that means a lot to them to carry the rings. In fact it is not even that strange now days to have a pet act as the ring bearer.

Now you know a little more about the history behind the flower girl as well as the ring bearer. Make sure you choose well as you don't want to let centuries of predecessors down.
