The Different Types Of Spill Berms

By Dawn Bradford

Oil spill berms are barriers that you put around oil spills. The idea is to ensure that the oil spills are contained within a manageable area and are kept from spreading. However large the spillage is, and irrespective of the location, you will most definitely get a berm that suits your needs.

Modular barriers are the most flexible of all. You can extend them until they fit the space you have. Others are made not for purposes of extensibility but for the sake of easy locomotion. When you have to rush to attend to an emergency, it helps to have a barrier that is not hard to transport.

These portable berms can be used with drums and containers. Their small size is their biggest selling point. Any other barrier that has been designed for the purpose of emergency situations can be grouped under the portable group. Good barriers should be made out of material that is light while still strong at the same time.

Polyurethane elastomer and polythene are the main materials that are used to make these products. These materials are desirable since they are readily available, are firm and most importantly, they are very durable. The casting is done in a way that makes it easy to carry them using your care or storing them.

Assembly fast barriers are used to handle huge spillages. The instructions on how to interlock the different parts is usually provided by the manufacturer. The instructions are usually simple to follow and anybody should easily assemble them.

If you are scared of assembling, there are other spill berms that are ready to use. Ideally, you will lay them down then put your equipment right on top. Some of them have sides that will rise automatically thereby creating a basin to capture the oil.
