Despite its relatively small size, Florence is one of the most beautiful cities in Italy with an extremely rich history and some of the best sightseeing to be had in the whole country.

Florence pulls several thousands of tourists from all around the globe all through the year who throng the place to see the days of Renaissance depicted in its architecture. Though it is impossible to cover all the places of Florence in some days, yet we have described a few of its places of great historical importance.

The Uffizi Gallery is believed by many to be probably the best renaissance art collection in the world. Florence is always regarded as the cradle and spiritual home of the renaissance artistic movement, so it comes as little wonder that so many of the great renaissance works of art are still in Florence.

The buildings used by the gallery were once government office buildings that belonged to the regional councils. Of course, now the gallery serves the tourists better by way of showcasing the art works of what may be called Florentine in nature.

Some of the exhibits in the Uffizi gallery date back to the times before the renaissance era though the main works belonged to the renaissance period. The proud possessions of the De Medici family thanks to their munificence fill the gallery in Uffizi. That they should remain only in Florence was their condition.

13th century architecture can be seen in the depictions of the Florence Cathedral. It was the architect Arnolfo di Cambio who started the work in this Cathedral.

The interior of Florence Cathedral is quite magnificent measuring 155 x 90 metres. An excellent view of Florence can be had by those willing to climb the 414 steps up to the top of the bell tower for a price of 6.

Artistic highlights of a visit to Florence Cathedral consists of the stained glass windows constructed by Donatello as well as the frescoes decorating the interior walls of the Cathedral.

In the main square of the old city of Florence is situated the Neptune's Fountain. Apart from revelling in the architectural designs of the fountain you can relax a bit at the Signoria Square between visits.
