Tips to save money on your gas bills

By Chris Skingsley

Your suntan has faded and you are feeling cold just considering preparing yourself for freezing rain, robust winds and the likelihood of a white Xmas. Winter is just beginning to raise it's ugly head and so are the costs concerned with heating your flat. With today's economy such as it is we all look for ways in which we will spend less money, so before you turn up your thermostat to a temperature that makes you recall your summer vacation, consider the ways you are able to save money on your heating bill.

Having the heating at a temperature that helps you to relax in shorts and T-shirt isn't inexpensive. By wearing garments like jumpers, slippers and thermal underwear, you can cut back your temperature setting and remain warm. A reduction of only 1 degree can produce a saving of up to 10 p.c.

Think about where your furniture is placed. Items like sofas should not be in front of a radiator as they will soak up the bulk of the heat being released into the room instead of it entering the air around you. If it's a bright day keep internal doors open so that your complete home benefits from the sun for as long as practicable. Power from the sun is free.

Heat rises and as such a certain amount of heat can be lost through your attic pipes and external walls. Having your attic room and brickwork insulated can reduce heating costs as the insulation acts like a blanket, keeping the rising heat trapped within. For optimum potency have your pipe work and water tank lagged also.

Making sure your boiler is serviced regularly is also critical. Their parts are liable to wear and if they aren't replaced when required it could lead to valuable fuel being wasted before it has even entered your heating system, excess amounts being used or even the need for a costly boiler repair.

It's great to come in from the cold to a warm home but think about what is being heated when you're not home. If your home and heating appliances are efficient in how they retain heat then lower heat settings can keep your home temperate and still stop events like burst water pipes in grim weather.
