How To Obtain A New American Passport For Travel

By Ben Pate

Knowing how to obtain a new pass port is important to learn before making and confirming travel plans. Applications for passports are available online. The entire process can take up to two months so plan accordingly and have it renewed on time to avoid having to reschedule your travel itinerary. Also remember to register passports for each member of the family as current US laws require people of all ages to have one. The process may seem daunting but it is in fact simple and could be the easiest part of planning your trip.

Passport Applications

The new passport application form is available on the Internet to be printed at home on matte white paper. Renewals can be mailed or taken to the Passport Acceptance Facility that is closest to your place of residence. This form will generally request information such as your Social Security, age, height, and address. It will only take a couple of minutes to fill them out.

Photograph

Each application requires a recently taken photo of the applicant. It must be 2x2 inches and be taken with a white or off-white background. No hats or head coverings may be worn in the photo unless worn on a daily basis as part of a religious custom. Sunglasses and work uniforms are also not allowed. The best way to have this picture taken is at a post office for a small fee.

Citizenship

Proof of citizenship must also be included. For most, this is in the form of a valid birth certificate with a raised seal. If an original US birth certificate is not available, an alternate form of proof of citizenship is suitable.

Identity

Identity will need to be verified with a driver's license or other valid form of photo ID. A government or military ID is also acceptable. When renewing, proof of citizenship and identification are not needed so long as the current passport is included.

Fees

New passports cost $110 for the application fee and $25 for the execution fee. The fees will not be returned, even if the application is not approved. They will need to be completed in person at the facility. Most payment types are accepted at the facility such as cash, credit and check.

Passport Renewals

Renewing passports requires a payment of 110 dollars each for the application fee. They can be completed through the mail. It is only possible to pay with money order or check when sending payment through the mail. Make sure you renew passports at least 9 months before they are set to expire.

Child Passports

Minors who are under the age of 16 will need to have parental consent to obtain passports. They will have to complete their passports at the facility, in person. All children need their own passports, even if they are infants. Minor passports have to be renewed every 5 years.

Expedited Services

To speed up the process, a 60-dollar fee can be added for expedited applications. For best results, use overnight shipping both ways. If sending the application through the mail, it is important to write the word "expedite" in bold letters on the outside of the envelope where it will be easily seen.
