Parys, a place of beauty laying on the Vaal River.

By Chelsea Hirschfield

Laying In the Free State Province, Parys is a hidden gem. Laying on the banks of the Vaal River, it is a very beautiful place .Although not many of the old buildings remain from several years ago, loads of new and interesting places have opened up, which makes it an ideal holiday getaway from the busy city of Gauteng. Through my own experience, I was taken on exciting journey through this picturesque little country town.

A really great place to spend the day is at the Vaal dam. This is a giant playground for all types of water sports and water events. Each year races are held at the Dam. But whether you are actually participating in an event or just watching in the background, you will have a great time. The environment is peaceful and tranquil offering picturesque views. So bring along a scrumptious picnic basket and the entire family for a day of fun in the sun.

Something I really enjoyed, like I'm sure most of you will was berry picking at Bon-Af Berry Farm. We got a tour of the farm as we picked the berries straight from the bushes. There were blueberries, blackberries, bramble berries and so much more. After our fun day of picking berries, we relaxed at the little caf on the farm were we enjoyed tasty tea and yummy homemade scones and jam. Yummy! Just remember that berry picking season is from November to April.

White river rafting is a great activity for those who love the water. Bring your family and friends and explore the upper Vaal River on a trip you will not forget. The biggest rapid on the path you will take is called the Big Daddy and it's not given that name for nothing. But the experience is amazing. Smaller rapids called the whiplash, are available for those taking the safer route, where you will receive a two man raft and just float down the river.

If you are one who enjoys watching birds like I do then bird watching at Carryblaire is the perfect place for you to go to. There are over 450 bird species there all unique in their own way. Bird such as spotted eagle owls, paradise fly catches and cardinal woodpeckers are among many birds that frolic around the glades on a daily basis. So don't forget your cameras and sun block.
