The Differences between Tobacco Grown in the Shade and the Sun

By Drew Danson

When you begin the hobby of collecting and smoking cigars, one of the things you will find is that you have a great deal to learn. Not all cigars are the same. In fact, each of the items you add to your cigar humidor will be different. This is because so much goes into the process that even two cigars from the same batch can taste differently. Knowing how these cigars are made and what goes into them will help you make better decisions anytime you want to make a purchase.

One of the things that will directly affect your cigar will be the tobacco and whether it is grown in the sun or it is grown in the shade. Did you know that direct sunlight can have that kind of impact? Actually it will have a big impact, and it is something you will want to know about when you are shopping for cigars and cigar accessories.

The importance of the tobacco does not end here though. In fact, how the plant is grown will also have a big impact on the cigars. You will find that tobacco is grown in two different situations: the sun and the shade. Tobacco grown in the shade will grow very large. This is because it grows in a hot, damp environment. These leaves are by far the best choice for the cigar wrappers.

What does this mean for your cigars? Tobacco grown in the direct sunlight will provide the most flavor and should be used for the filling inside of the cigar. This way, when you smoke it, you will be able to enjoy all of those flavors. Tobacco grown in the shade is best suited for creating the cigar wrappers. This is because the leaves grow large and lush, but they do not create any flavors that will take away from the overall flavor of the cigar.

Sun and shade grown tobacco both should be used in the creation of a good cigar. However, shade grown is best used for wrappers. Sun grown cigars will provide the best in flavor.
