Dealing with Hygrometer Issues

By Drew Danson

Many people think that the cigars themselves are the most important part of a hobby. While choosing and collecting the right cigars should certainly be very important, your choices will not matter if you do not have properly functioning cigar accessories. It is vital that all accessories, especially your humidor, are working properly. If they malfunction, they will have a direct affect on those cigars and that affect will be a negative one.

One of the main things you will need to know about the hygrometer in your cigar humidor is that it will lose calibration from time to time. Because of this, you will need to recognize when the calibration is lost and then recalibrate the device properly. This way, you can make sure you never have a problem with your cigar humidor when it comes to humidification.

If you have a digital hygrometer, you will need salt, distilled water, a small plastic container, and a baggie. Create a mixture of salt and water that is very thick, almost like a paste. You should put that mixture in the small container, and then put the container along with the hygrometer into the baggie. Leave this sitting for a full day to two days. The hygrometer should read 75%. If it does not, you can just calibrate it so that it will function properly.

If you have a digital hygrometer for your humidor, you will need to handle the process a little differently. You will need the following items: a plastic bag, a small open container, salt and water. You will need to mix salt and water to a thick consistency in the small open container. Then, put both the hygrometer and the container in a sealed plastic bag. After a full day, the hygrometer should give you a reading of 75%. If it does not, it has lost calibration and you just need to readjust it to 75%.

Your cigar accessories are really just as important as the cigars themselves. In order to make sure you are able to truly enjoy the cigars and all of their flavors, you need to make sure all of your cigar accessories are working correctly. If your humidor does not seem to be working right, start by troubleshooting and recalibrating the hygrometer.
