Belts, Watches, And Shades: Accessories For Men This Summer

By Dana Morris

Accessories are becoming a more frequent visitor to men's designer fashion, now that burgeoning trends are allowing us to mix and match to find new styles to express regular new looks. Adding those finishing touches to your wardrobe this summer has never been more important, to help you stand out from the crowd.

Express yourself with the little extra touches that help make or break an outfit. Starting at the top, the hottest in headwear not only looks great but is practical and comfortable. The flat cap is a quick addition to add style and warmth, choose from River Island's denim, Yohji Yamamoto's flat cap in stripes or the French Connection variety with a duck-billed rim, for the snug look, a beanie is comfort personified from Soul Cal, in-trend Breton stripes from Scandanavian Norse Projects and nautical in Won Hundred's seafaring headwear. The baseball cap is a double-header being employed for the bright colours of True Religion and Ed Hardy or the solid stripes of colours from Franklin & Marshal and New Era, as well as making the perfect guise to pick up on another men's fashion trend: the subdued military tones of Norse Projects' Hektor Nature Cap in dark blue and khaki. The fishing hat is a festival-must in both the sun and summer showers, with a mix of marine from the Walkers Hat by Universal Works, the brightly toned and electric patterns of Paul Smith's trilby or the feathered trilby from Brixton Hats.

Sunglasses are not only a practical item but a must-have fashion accessory this summer, with old styles making a welcome return. Go retro with the Wayfarer that combines classic shapes with contemporary patterns from Polo by Ralph Lauren, Oakley and Jeepers Peepers. Round sunglasses have been adopted as eyewear of choice for Linda Farrow & Dries van Noten, Nonnative, Illesteva and The Chronicles of Never, or fly high with Top Gun-esque aviator designs from RayBan and 80s sporty Sunpocket that experiment with mirrored and reflective lenses and bright frames for some fearless fun.

For a touch of customisation around your neck look to scarves such as Alexander McQueen's MCQ Flag design, Universal Works dotted scarf or Junk de Luxe whose scarf comes in stripes that can be reversed. For smarter occasions, be it work or sprucing up a casual look, try a statement tie available in stripes or florals from Duchamp, paisley or chequered from Aquascutum or the contrast of camouflage with stand out brights from Mr Bathing Ape.

Watches go classic with Timex and Casio digitals and shine in neon brights from Swatch and Toy watches, plus adding trend hitting colour blocking patterns to the multi-coloured hues are Triwa watches with models like the Mollotov Bullit and Kamrat Chrono. Keeping the other wrist company, cuffs are balancing out the colour wheel with darker tones of blacks, greys and browns, adding buckle or stud detail from the likes of Asos and All Saints.

Functionality and style combine with the woven Anderson belt and the multi-coloured delights from Folk Young and Carhartt's webbing, leather is the material of choice for Paul Smith's PS range, and Bolongaro Trevor mixes things up with chained belts and safety pins, contrasted to Neil Barrett's cord belt with leather buckle. In the bag department sporty satchels in old school styles from Gola, Adidas and Puma Originals compete with military-charged weathered-looking rucksacks from labels Sandqvist, Pointer and Reclaimed Vintage in Indian and Norwegian trends, or for more vibrancy go for Jansport and Penfield.

For some playful fun add a pair of the aptly named Happy Socks for frivolous feet or tickle your toes with the vibrantly coloured socks from designers Falke, Jack & Jones and Polo by Ralph Lauren.
