Online Language Arts Games Are Fun And Educational

By Lillian Powell

Online language arts games are easy to find, free and fun to play. There are several websites that contain free flash-based apps that will help students to build skills and tackle concepts while having fun. Most of these titles have been designed by teachers and/or educational organizations/institutions. There are often also other activity-resources on these sites, like downloadable worksheets, texts, coloring books, etc. Many famous brands, series and celebrities can be seen showcased too. All in all, the Internet is a wonderful resource for fun, educational activities.

The most practical of these apps incorporate official curricula and learning benchmarks, and are usually listed by grade. Individual apps tend to focus on specific areas, e. G. Vocabulary, sentence structure, spelling, etc. Good websites will provide guidance to parents and players regarding appropriate titles for specific purposes/goals.

Naturally, the sophistication of the game would increase according to grade/age category. A kindergarten game would be simple in overall complexity, and would focus on basic goals, like identifying colors or shapes, counting, and so on. Higher grades would have titles that contain more complex puzzles and activities and more challenging goals.

Popular characters from books, TV shows, cartoons etc., pop stars and athletes often feature in online language arts games, making them even more engaging. The Harry Potter series, Charlotte's Web, Dr Seuss, and many other favorites have their own dedicated apps. Disney cranks out dozens of online readers, eBooks, apps and other educational products. Most children's shows have a web portal that includes educational apps featuring the show's characters, and unless otherwise indicated, are less focused to specific grades and more on general age groups.

Spelling- and vocabulary-themed apps often incorporate elements of traditional word games. Cross- and code-words, word-searches, anagrams and other classic puzzles are given innovative treatments and high-score systems and leader boards add an element of competition. Scrabble has inspired many clones, and there are official theme-based tournaments and special matches out there too.

When it comes to making a subject more accessible and making learning a fun activity, online language arts games do a pretty good job. Every day more apps appear online, and there is something out there for everyone. Many apps like these are available for mobile devices too.
