Eliminate Severe Acne: Treatment Options

By Kathy Roberts

There are two types of categories for acne, severe and mild. Blackheads, whiteheads and pustules are some of the mild types of acne, these are also the most common type of acne. Although in this article we are going to focus on one of the sever types of acne, cystic acne.

Cystic acne is the worst form of acne that a person can experience. It is more serious and damaging compared to other forms of acne such as pimples or whiteheads. This is due to the fact that the infection penetrates deeply within the skin layers and can cause very large and painful nodules. It is also known as acne vulgaris. The factor that contributes to the formation of acne cysts and acne nodules is clogged pores that don't allow the normal flow of the sebum to the skin surface. Once this occurs, the pores become blocked and inflamed due to the immune system trying to fight off the infection. The appearance of cystic acne is triggered by a stronger reaction of the immune system in front of a more severe infection.

As these powerful attacks occur, the body produces a substance called sebum. Excess amounts of this turn into a rich feeding ground for bacteria that lives inside the skin follicles or on the surface of the skin. The condition produced by the overflow of sebum can lead to the formation of pimples as large as five millimeters.

Understanding Acne Cysts

Retention keratosis is a condition that can worsen facial cysts. When skin cells, especially those that cover hair follicles are disposed improperly, the retention occurs. Improper disposal of cells leads to the clogging of these follicles. The infection can then spill onto other follicles which increase the inflammation and causes acne cysts to spread.

Another factor that may contribute to nodulocystic acne is hormones. Testosterone and androgen hormones can help to increase sebum levels. It is necessary that the sebum ducts be clear in order to prevent them from getting clogged and decreasing the risk of the cysts formation. Other factors such as genetic background and lifestyle of a person can determine the severity of the acne. Even stress can enhance acne problems.

Even though this severe acne type is harsh, there are ways of treating acne cysts. Many dermatologists prescribe a drug called Accutane, and is one taken in the form of a tablet. It works by reducing the size of the oil glands and thereby controlling acne production. The success rate of Accutane is as high as 80% on the other hand; severe side effects like depression have been seen in some patients. It is recommended that this drug only be taken if all other methods have failed.

Another option can be provided by a dermatologist and it uses cortisone as the active ingredient. The injections provide instant relief of the area affected, reducing its redness and inflammation. Consequently, the pimple is reduced and thus becomes less visible. Some of the problems that may occur after receiving the injection are temporary skin discoloration and bleeding.

It is complicated to cure cystic acne however there are treatments for it. This type of acne requires a special acne skin care treatment since some could worsen the condition. Cystic acne can also be treated with natural products designed to improve the skin in many ways.
