Be Smart About Buying Tickets Online!

By Peter Lewis

Being able to purchase tickets online is a great convenience. Whether it is for a sporting event, a movie, a concert, or even a theme park, buying tickets online saves time and eliminates the possibility of an event being sold out. As with any online purchase, though, it is always best to make smart choices and take precautions to avoid identity theft or sharing personal information with third parties. These days, the state of the economy is a very common concern of the masses, and because of the hard times many people face, fraud has become more prevalent. People should be cautious, but it is still safe to make purchases online if one knows how to keep information protected.

When making purchases online, it is best to use a credit card with good security features in place. If a credit card number gets stolen, all it takes is one phone call to the credit card company to report fraud and close the credit card, preventing any further fraudulent use by non-authorized parties. The majority of credit card companies frequently do checks to ensure there is no unauthorized activity. Many credit card companies will shut down and block a credit card as soon as they suspect unusual activity to protect the customer. While eChecks are safe, they should be used only when the option to use a credit card is not available. Using an eCheck means giving out the actual checking number, which is a lot harder to close than one credit card.

Another simple trick to ensure a site is safe for making a ticket purchase on is to check the URL before putting in any credit card or personal information. The URL, also known as the web address, will show whether or not a site is safe. Scam sites will use an address very similar to the original, usually changing only one letter or switching two letters around so it is not as easy to spot the difference. For example, there was a scam going around using PayPal, where the scam artists changed the "L" at the end to a capitol "I." The capitol "I" looks enough like the lower-case "L" that it is nearly impossible to spot the difference. If there is an "https" instead of an "http" then the site is secure. The "s" at the end of the "http" stands for secure, and any information that is put in to that site will safely be transferred without sharing the information with any third party. It is also best to use a private, locked internet connection when inputting any personal information. Public connections are easy for hackers to get into and steal personal information.

An additional simple step to take is to make sure a site and a connection is secure. If an Internet connection requires a password to access it, then it is a secure connection that only those with the password can access. If your computer has an unlocked Internet connection, then third parties do not need permission to access the connection. It is best to set any home Internet connection to private and require a secure password so that hackers cannot easily access it. Also, take a look at the web address on the page. Secure web pages will start with "https" instead of "http." Most sites will only have the "https" on pages that ask for sensitive information, such as the payment or address input pages. Always check to make sure a page URL starts with "https" before typing in any sensitive information.

Buying tickets online is quick and easy, just be sure to be cautious when giving out personal information. Taking these precautions will help to prevent any identity theft and allow for an enjoyable experience!
