What Are The Golden Rules In Terms Of Car Rental?

By Freddy Jones

When it comes to hiring a car these days, there are a number of reasons why you might decide to do this. No matter why you need to do this you should always follow the golden rules. Below are just a few of the things that you will have to consider when renting a car

Always check to see if your current insurance covers a hire car. Car rental agents make quite a bit of money selling extra insurance so the agent will probably try to get you to buy it. However you will be just wasting money on this if you are already covered with your existing policy. Do not just put your trust in the car hire representative but instead speak directly to your insurer.

Find out about the mileage limit on the car before you agree to hire it. Smaller companies usually have a limit when it comes to mileage but most of the bigger companies will offer unlimited mileage. Going over the mileage limit on a rental car could mean that you have to pay penalties. Make sure you find out before you drive away because there could be a limit hidden in the contract that you are unaware of; don't expect the car rental agent to bring it to your attention.

It is important that you never bring the car back late. If you are late bringing your car back then you could find that the company will charge you for a full day even if you were less than an hour late.

Find out if you are expected to fill the car with petrol before you take it back. You may be charge for the filling of the car by the company if you don't fill it up yourself. The amount of money that the car rental agency will charge you for this is sure to be significantly more than what you would pay at the pump.

You will have more choice if you book your car in advance; about one or two weeks is usually time enough.
