Selection Of Material For Garage Door

By Larry Blickly

There are two things which every home owner wants in his or her house and these two things are security and attraction. Garage door is a symbol of not only security but also is a very integral part of your home's exterior. In modern home designs most of the garages are made in front of the house which makes garage an integral part of the home exterior. When you think garage as the second entrance of your house then, it gets importance from security point of view. Putting all of the above things in mind you need to make sure that your garage door is not only attractive but also secure to protect your family. Few years back people used to consider wood as the only choice of material for door making but there have been many new materials introduced.

Basically there are two choices available for materials which are wood and metal. Wood, being the oldest material, provides lots of extra features in designing and customization. You can make wooden door to match with any style of exterior and they can also match with the overall color combination of your house. Weather conditions can make a huge impact on your choice while installing a wooden door. If you live in some mild and normal weather conditions then, wood can be suited perfectly but if you have little bit of uncertainty in weather conditions then, you cannot go with wood as your prime material.

Wood is already an expensive material from its initial cost and it needs to be insulated with an expensive and high quality insulator to stay intact in little harsh weather. This installation of extra insulator increases the overall price of the door and if you need an economical choice then, you need to look into metallic doors.

Metal has always been a more reliable option than wood. Metals also possess some built in resistance against weary weather. Popularity of metals in garage doors has increased which has encouraged designers to provide more variations and advanced features in these doors. Few years back metal was not preferred over wood because of its less aesthetic features but these days this is not the case. Especially in steel and fiberglass some very attractive wooden textures are available and when you install these textures then, none can tell the difference between wood and this texture. With their aesthetic features also enhanced, metals are preferred these days over wood.

These are the advantages and disadvantages of both wooden and metallic doors and I hope that the above discussion will enlighten your thoughts and you will be in a position to select the best material according to your environment and needs.
