Why Is Active Learning Better?

By Greg Tilley

You may remember back in high school there is one class that you really hated. Of course there were other factors such as your level of interest and ability to focus that influenced your dislike of the class. You may have remembered. You thought you would die before the bell rang because this was the class that was so painfully boring. All that you could do was sit there, try to stay awake despite the headache that has developed or daydream about lunch while the teacher went on with the lecture.

But experts say that this scenario is considered to be normal. People do not learn well in the passive way, and this is what the experts have determined. In their opinion, trying to learn by just listening to a lecture or watching someone else doesn't really work.

A better and more effective way of learning is doing the activity, and this is what these experts have discovered. It has proven to be much better than by watching, listening, or reading.

They are not advocating that we get rid of the classroom but that we supplement classroom learning with hands-on learning. Sometimes classroom learning is the only option available however we now realize that learning takes place by reading about a subject, discussing a subject, hearing others speak on the subject, watching audio-visual presentations, studying real life experiences or by doing the task itself.

Different retention rates are the result of different presentation methods. An example would be finding out that as adults, about 90% of our focus is expended in the first five minutes of a class.

After the hearing or reading methods, seeing something done is the next best method of learning. And last but not least, the best method is by doing.

Some old school teachers feel like it's up to them to fill up their students with some amount of knowledge because they treat these students as if they are totally empty. But today, we are seeing interactive learning becoming more and more popular. The experiences that each student brings to the table is what this type of learning recognizes and to achieve effective learning, it utilizes these experiences.

The differences in personalities have an affect on the individuals preferred learning style so we must take these differences into account. No two people learn alike. Instead of just sitting and soaking everything in, try your best to be an active participant the next time you attend a meeting a work. You will find that you may learn something and you will come away with a sense of achievement.

When you take an active part in learning, you will discover that the time will pass by a lot quicker and chances are, you could get your tasks done earlier.
