North America Before Columbus

By Casie Moody

Some historians have asserted that Christopher Columbus never physically visited America, and certainly did not discover America. Most historical material indicates that it was in 1492 that Columbus discovered America while traversing North America.

Though Columbus misnamed the natives he found "Indians", there is in fact a long history of Indians in the United States dating back to at least 1902; these Indian immigrants represent a wide range of social classes, educational backgrounds and wealth.

Sikhs, or Punjab, represent a group of early Indian inhabitants of America. This group left India on a quest for employment and prosperity.

Indian Americans are Indian in origin, and their presence in America has grown significantly. With a mere 200 residing in America in 1902, over 2.15 million currently call America home.

The economic circumstances of Indian Americans have become vastly diverse, with many from this group serving as business owners and organizational leaders of enterprises of all types.

According to Charles Mann, the author of New Revelations of the America Before Columbus, published in 2005, he claims that Indian Americans were in large numbers in the western hemisphere even before Columbus discovered America. They had high level of cultural advancement.

Though the history of Indian Americans has been sidelined, their origin is diversified. They came from Fiji, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, United Kingdom, Jamaica, Canada, Guyana and Malaysia where their population continues to increase.

The largest concentration of Indian Americans resides in the United States. These individuals take religion very seriously, played a large role in the history of America, and were present during its discovery.

Of course, that still doesn't solve the riddle of who was the first person from the Old World to find the New - Columbus, the Indians, or Amerigo Vespucci - an Italian explorer born April 9, 1453 who spent much of his time poring over the old maps and theorizing about unknown places.

There are plenty of legends about the discovery of America, but little in the way of detailed history - what we do know is that the United States is, compared to most nations of the world, still very young but it has one of the most fascinating stories ever told.
