Denver Activities: Something For Everyone

By Mavis Roach

If you've grown bored with your hometown, you must not live in the Mile High City. Colorado's capital is overflowing with features and attractions. An exhaustive listing of Denver activities would fill multiple books, but this list contains a few highlights to pique the interest of a first-time visitor.

Eggs, onions, cheese, peppers and ham make up the city's signature breakfast, the Denver omelet, a hearty start to any day. After breakfast, apply sunscreen before your foray into one of America's sunniest cities. This city basks in sunshine 300 days a year.

The Sixteenth Street pedestrian mall will lead straight to the Capitol building, topped with a dome of real gold. This building has a step on its western side that is exactly one mile above sea level. Next to the Capitol is the Colorado History Museum, a site full of information regarding the history of the state and the wild lives of the gold miners who founded it.

If you are a lover of the arts, stop at the Denver Performing Arts Complex, home to ten performance arenas. There is an opera house, a concert hall, a ballroom and seven theatres. There's something for everyone's taste at DPAC.

If you'd rather see sports than a show, check out Denver's eight professional sports teams. Taking in a baseball game at Coors Field is a fan favorite. If you're not a Rockies fan, you might like the Broncos, or the Nuggets, or the Avalanche, or the Rapids, or the Crush or the Outlaws, or the Mammoth.

Palate-pleasing restaurants are tucked between galleries and specialty shops at Larimer Square. This charming Victorian district is one of the city's epicenters of trendiness. It also showcases the Colorado sunsets beautifully.

After the sun sets, if you're not too weary from the day's adventures, warm up your vocal chords and find your way to the Wild Ivories Dueling Piano Saloon. This huge dueling piano bar may just be the most fun extravaganza in town and customers are part of the show. A nightcap of comedy and sing-a-long merrymaking will have you chuckling and whistling a merry tune all the way back to your hotel.

Boredom in the Mile High City is almost an impossibility. For those who just want to relax, the city has more parks and more beer brewed than any other American city. No matter what your interests are, there is a wealth of Denver activities from which to choose, not the least of which is seeing how money is created at the Treasury Department's Mint.
