Moving? Here Are Some Helpful Tips

By Joyce McIntosh

While you might be moving into a great new house or relocating to a fantastic new city or town, the actual details of moving can cause a good amount of stress. If your moving date is approaching, think about following a few of these helpful suggestions.

When it comes to relocating or moving, being organized is a huge key to success and lower stress. To stay organized, create a list of all the tasks that need to be dealt with leading up to your moving date. You can organize the items by category to make it easier. For instance, you will need a category regarding your utilities. This includes turning off all of your services at the old address and turning them all on at the new address.

Changing your address is very important, and not only should you head down to the post office and fill out a change of address form, you also need to personally call many companies or offices and inform them of the change. This includes any company that bills you, such as credit card companies, doctors' offices and any magazines to which you subscribe. If the move takes you fairly far from home, you also need to ask health professionals for medical records and get school records for your children or yourself. It's far easier to accomplish these tasks before you move than when you are hundreds of miles away.

Packing is always one of the most overwhelming tasks in the moving process, and you can make it much easier if you get started as quickly as you can. Start out by packing items that you don't actually use often, such as books, memorabilia, holiday decorations and other types of decorative items, such as framed photos. Packing materials can be quite pricey, but you can cut costs by checking out websites such as Freecycle or Craigslist for people giving away moving boxes at no cost. Old newspapers are great for packing, so ask friends to save their old ones for your packing.

If there is a gap between your move out date and your move-in date at the new place, you might be wondering what to do with all of your belongings. Renting a storage unit is the perfect solution. There are many East Lansing storage facilities or Bath storage facilities to consider, but you need to find one that offers low-cost, month-to-month storage options. Some even offer weekly storage options, so if you have five weeks until moving in, you can pay for one month and one week, rather than paying for two full months that you really won't use.

You might be able to save a little money if your storage company offers discounts for active duty military, senior citizens or students. In addition, you will want a storage company where the premises are entirely fenced in and very well lit. Security cameras also should be in place throughout the facility. It is also very handy to find a company that allows you to access your belongings at any time day or night. This type of flexibility can help make moving much easier.
