Excavating For The Construction Industry

By Cherry Annie

Trenches for drainage conduits shall be excavated carefully to the required grade as indicated on the drawings with due allowance made for the minimum depth of bedding material required. Trench widths shall be a minimum of twice the conduit external diameter (pipe) or width (culvert). The Contractor shall remove any trees, roots, stumps or other obstructions which interfere with the construction of the drainage works.

The Supplier shall comply with all Construction Safety Act Regulations relating to safety of the drainage works by ensuring that barricades are installed around excavations, ladders are available within trenches, excavations are shored where necessary, and otherwise complying with all other requirements of the regulations. Where soft clay or silt or other unsuitable material occurs at the completed trench excavation grade, such material shall be removed and replaced with suitable trench base material.

The Supplier shall not permit pumped water to discharge on to any areas of existing plant, or on to any areas of earthworks being constructed, but shall ensure that all pumped water discharges into appropriate drainage channels. Loose material at the bottom of the trench excavation as a result of over excavation shall be removed if so directed by the Superior and replaced with approved bedding material at the Supplier's cost. Trenches for drainage pipes shall be excavated carefully to the required grade as indicated on the drawings with due allowance made for the minimum depth of bedding material required.

The Vendor will, at his own expense, do all things necessary to keep the excavated areas free from water during the construction of the drainage conduit. This will include preventing flood water, run-off water or other extraneous water from entering the excavated area; the installation, if necessary, of a dewatering system to prevent the ingress of groundwater; and the provision of all pumping requirements to ensure that any water entering the excavated area is immediately removed. The Vendor will comply with all Construction Safety Act Regulations relating to safety of the drainage works by ensuring that barricades are installed around excavations, ramps are available within excavated areas, excavations are shored where necessary, and otherwise complying with all other requirements of the regulations.
