The Story Of Filson

By Robert Greenfield

When C.C. Filson's Pioneer Alaska Clothing and Blanket Manufacturers first opened its doors in 1897, the Great Klondike Gold Rush was on, and thousands upon thousands of gold seekers and fortune hunters were swarming the Pacific Northwest before heading north. C.C. Filson took advantage of this opportunity and founded the company known today as Filson in Seattle, Washington. C.C. Filson was a born outdoorsmen and he used his pioneer spirit to open a shop that would cater to Gold Rush prospectors.

C.C. Filson's Pioneer Alaska and Blanket Manufacturers was open for business, and Mr. Filson dedicated himself to making durable and quality clothing and goods for the fortune hunters and gold prospectors headed north. Mr. Filson had a reputation for telling the truth and an incredible work ethic, but it was perhaps his years of experience running an outfitters store for loggers that most prepared him for his new venture.

It was because of the harsh and extreme weather conditions experienced by the Gold Rush pioneers that Filson designed and made his goods. During that time and era, clothing was a matter of survival, not choice. C.C. Filson owned a mill and made Mackinaw goods such as clothing and blankets. He also sold sleeping bags, boots and shoes that were designed for the cold temperatures in the North.

Another step Filson took was keeping in close contact with anyone who purchased his goods. He did this so he could take feedback on what did and didn't work and so he could tailor his goods to meet the needs and desires of his customers. Filson realized that the Gold Rush pioneers were relying on him and his goods, and so he designed and made everything to be the absolute best in terms of quality and durability.

By the time the Klondike Gold Rush was over, Filson had built a core group of customers who kept buying the company's quality and durable clothing and goods. Mr. Filson used his experience outfitting loggers and started making clothing specifically targeted to loggers, including the Filson Cruiser. The Filson Cruiser was patented on March 3, 1914, and it soon became Filson's best selling item. In fact, the Cruiser has remained Filson's best selling item and over half a million of the jacket have been sold.

Filson continued making his clothing and goods from premium materials and also personally guaranteed everything he made and sold. If Filson didn't sell something a customer needed, Mr. Filson would often custom-make the item for them. By the 60's, Filson had built a reputation for honesty, reliability, and customer satisfaction, and was known as the preferred outfitter for outdoorsmen.

When Filson entered the 1960's and 70's, the company had built a reputation as the premier supplier to outdoorsmen around the globe. Filson clothing and apparel could be found everywhere premium outdoor wear was sold, and the companies clothing and goods were mail-ordered from far off places such as Greenland. In the 1990's, the company introduced vests for fly-fishing, as well as re-introducing their classic Rugged Twill and Bridle Leather Luggage Line.

Today, Filson is as much known for their line of classic bags and luggage as their outdoor apparel, and the company is still committed to making quality goods and apparel that are durable, long lasting, and stylish. The company's philosophy has always remained the same, which is to make sure everything they make is the absolute best. Filson started out by making goods and apparel for the pioneers of the Pacific Northwest, but have grown today into a company that offers a wide selection of clothing, goods, and accessories for a multitude of professions, activities and needs.
