The Process Of Creating A T Shirt Memory Quilt

By Corinne Daniel

One of the most creative and touching gifts that can be given is a T shirt memory quilt. It is a highly sentimental gift that can be given away for a myriad of reasons to a lot of people. An example would be a mother making one for her son who will be going to college soon. The knowledge of how to make one is easily gained.

It may also be made class of graduates. This gesture is just as moving and sentimental for them since it is bound to remind them of recent memories of that are good, bad and neither. The students may even choose to sign it after it is completed.

The creation process is easily done and very simple in nature. Basically, it mainly involves taking these shirts that are no longer usable and cutting and sewing them together. Just because it is simple does not mean that there is nothing to be learned from the process. A tip here and there would not be such a bad idea.

The shirts to use may come into question when choosing, but it is best to utilize those that hold important meanings to the recipient of the gift. Favorites that are no longer worn would do nicely. You may even reach as far back as childhood to look for clothes to be used. This will increase the sentimental value of the item.

Other than old clothes, there are a couple of materials that needs gathering. Among them is an all purpose thread, a sewing machine needle, perhaps a back panel fabric or maybe a border fabric. These are all necessary in order to achieve a complete end product.

After that, the first step is to cut the shirts. The exact number of shirts required is proportional to what size you want to achieve. Take each one and cut it into a square panel. Fusible interfacing should be cut as well, and placed into the panels. Ensure that they are much bigger in comparison to the panels.

Step two would be to take the interfacing and iron it on the back of the panels. It is up to you on how you choose to arrange them along with how you quilt them. This is where your creativity is encouraged, so the choices are ultimately yours.

Additional precautions must be taken in making these things. It can be plagued with problems such as seams being undone for whatever reason. It can be a bit problematic and very inconvenient for some people. You may iron the seams, followed by sewing it in a double stitch. It reinforces the material and makes it less likely to tear than before it was done this way.

The process where a T shirt memory quilt can be made is not really that difficult to begin with. It is often done, and more often than not, it is considered a labor of love. If you want a creative way to make a new garment and recycle, this is one of your best bets
