Fabricating Steel - Common Processes

By Gerard Felt

Steel is without a doubt one of the most important supplies in construction and engineering. The fundamental nails and hammer are naturally always present, but there would also be wood, stones, glasses, concrete, and metal and steel. For building projects that use steel, most of the time, customised steels are needed to meet the needs. This is why they call for steel fabrication, which is a complicated process that involves melting and mixing materials to manufacture steel.

Many constructions prefer to use steel over other construction materials simply because steel is very durable and a lot stronger than other metals. It is also fire and heat resistant, making it perfect to be fabricated into different forms and used in various purposes. It can form parts of furniture, decorations, pipes, beams, and other building materials, as well as be used to produce tiny tools for homes, equipment, automobiles, and buildings.

Although its manufacturing procedure requires heavy equipment and needs to be executed professionals, it's a reasonably easy procedure. No specific ingredients are used in producing steel as it all depends upon the design and specs of the clients. It may include raw components manufactured using various tools. The primary ingredients, however, are iron and carbon, with small amount of phosphorus, silicon, sulphur, and oxygen thrown in.

There are numerous ways on how to produce steel, though there are two most frequently used methods. The first one is the integrated method, in which the ingredients are heated, dissolved, and mixed into steel. The other process is the electric arc furnace or EAF. This is requires putting recycled steel into a furnace to be dissolved and mixed with other materials. And since EAF process enables the use of recycled steel, it uses substantially less energy to produce steel compared with other steelmaking processes.

The newly produced steel will then be formed and cast into the shape and design provided by the client. The method may also involve using laser and water jet cutters, and various other equipment and components to meet specifications. As a client, you can specify the ingredients and the process used in steel and metal fabrication. Pick a fabrication works firm that concentrates on quality. Many construction supplies firms also manufacture nuts and bolts, pipings, and other buildings materials.
