Don't Make Christmas Hard On Yourself

By Vincent Mosley

Getting ready for Christmas has never been a chore for me. I am chomping at the bit to get my yard lit up, my house decorated, and my kids singing carols as soon as we finish the last bites of the Thanksgiving pie. It is such a treat for me to be able to begin my celebrations because Christmas really is the most magical time of the whole year.

Not everyone can be as lucky as I am, though. Some people get pretty down during the Holidays. I think this is a shame, because these are the days that are meant to be most enjoyed with your family and friends. If there is anything you take from this article, let it be that nothing is as terrible as it may seem and as long as you're alive you have something to rejoice about.

Try to set the Christmas mood in your house. If you're not the type who likes to decorate, perhaps this is the year you should think about starting. Your house is your sanctuary, and how can you really feel the Christmas spirit if your sanctuary looks the same as it does all year long? Put up a nice tree, decorate it, and see how you feel. You may find that stocking at the fireplace are in order. Before long, you'll find yourself stringing lights up outside.

Many people find that it is their family that stresses them out and makes them unhappy. Don't be ashamed by this, because it is far more common than you may think. Guilt is only going to breed more unhappiness, so you have to face this dilemma head-on. Talk to your family before Christmas or even Thanksgiving roll around and get all of the angst stuff out of the picture. They are your family. You can work anything out if you try.

Getting your house ready and your family problems taken care of are the hardest tasks you'll probably face, but you're not quite done yet. Now you have to worry about yourself! These tasks are meant to bring you closer to a Christmas-like state of being, but that won't happen if you don't act the part. The easiest way to do this is to buy yourself some Christmas shirts. It is easy, cheap, and you'll find that dressing the part helps you get into character. It will be no time at all before you're humming carols while you wrap presents to lie under the tree.
