Should You Wear A Helmet This Summer?

By Charles Saragossa

here have been many discussions among motorcycle riders about the merits of wearing a helmet vs. not wearing one. Many bikers prefer just to go riding in a bandana, or a baseball cap. Aside from adding on some sweet accessories, helmets are an important part of your summer motorcycle trips. A helmet may just be the most important thing you put on your head all year.

People definitely fall on one side of the line or the other, here. This is a divisive issue, something that can be as hotly debated as a political discussion. Some people like the freedom of the open road, and the wind through their hair, and bugs through their teeth, while some people feel that safety should come first, and besides, it's not that bad.

Sometimes, depending on where you live, the choice of whether or not to wear a helmet is made FOR you. In 20 out of the 50 states, you can get a ticket for not wearing a helmet. Of course, this is a hotly debated issue, but the individual states have the power to make their own laws regarding this issue. Heck, even two of the states don't require any helmet at all, even if your'e just a child. The rest of the states require minors to wear a helmet while riding.

So whether you've decided to wear a helmet on your own, or you live in one of the 20 states that require you to wear a helmet, the next great decision you will have to make is what kind of helmet to use. There are different kinds to choose from and advantages to each. To find the perfect helmet for you, you should check out helmets for sale online. There are some great deals out there!

So you want to buy a helmet, but where do you start? Should you get the one with the most protection, the full face helmet? This one will protect your entire head in the event of a crash, not just from impact, but will protect your face if you end up sliding down the roadway. The open face helmet does not offer this same protection, but gives you a lot more freedom as you ride. If you want a combination of the two, then you should definitely check out the modular, or flip face helmet. This helmet will allow you to instantly change between full face or open face helmets.

All arguing aside, this is a very personal decision. Assuming you don't live in a state that makes you wear a helmet, do you wear one? And if you do wear a helmet, which kind? Maybe you love comfort, or maybe you are most attracted to safety. There are advantages and disadvantages to both, but at the end of the day, it's all up to the rider. Live free and ride, or Live to ride another day. That about sums up the decision.
