How A Great Space Game Is Made

By Yasmine Y. Yost

There are many space game design teams that work hard to make intelligent, challenging, and entertaining games for players and gaming fans around the world. There are millions of individuals all around the world who are at least casual games; there are also die hard gamers that are obsessed with video games. While adults prefer games that are more intense, graphic, and truly challenging, younger gamers tend to prefer releases that are fun and simple while still presenting enough of a challenge to keep them engaged. In an effort to reach their target audience and make their latest games as popular as possible, modern game makers spend a lot of time designing every aspect of their new releases.

A space game design team often gets started with a basic gaming genre or concept, such as a shooter game, and then expand this with their own creative ideas in order to break from typical genre norms. This includes creating the main storyline behind the events of the game and creating characters that will resonate with gamers while playing. This can be hard, since they have to fit the character's design with the type of gamer they are trying to entertain; children will prefer simple, fun characters while adults like to relate to their game's characters and see them as both realistic and complex.

Another challenge encountered by a space game design team is creating the game's overall background setting. Due to the fact that the majority of space themed games will take place in science fiction based settings, design teams have to get creative and make worlds that are familiar in the sci-fi world without being obvious copies of other games or sci-fi franchises. Concept art has to be prepared and then programmed; it is not always easy to turn the visual ideas that the design team has into real visual gaming features on a computer or TV screen.

Considerable quantities of game testing are done once the final product is just about ready to be shipped to gamers. Several hours are invested doing real game testing in which bugs in the programming are identified and removed in order to make the final product as smooth and fun to play as possible.

Space game design takes a lot of effort and is not simply a matter of gathering several science fiction ideas and throwing them together. Knowing about the effort that goes into producing these games can help you enjoy the experience of playing them that much more.
