Vacationing In Del Mar CA

By Terry Hunefeld

Del Mar California is a fashionable beach-side town just north of San Diego. Those who live there like to think that San Diego is paradise, but the beach towns along the coast are even better - definitely a heavenly type of paradise.

Our "paradise" here in north San Diego consists of several lovely, quaint beach towns: Solana Beach, Carlsbad, Del Mar and Encinitas are each drenched in the cooling breezes of the ocean while being showered with sunshine. Our communities have fascinating hotels, inns and resorts, extraordinary restaurants and dazzling beaches.

Del Mar has a very long record of Hollywood celebrities visiting because of the horse track that Bing Crosby and Jimmy Durante founded in 1936. Their star power made the Del Mar Race Track one of the most gorgeous and esteemed tracks in the world of racing. The horse track brought a steady steam of Hollywood types to the hotels in Del Mar. As a result, numerous Del Mar resorts and inns were founded and thrived.

Del Mar lodging accommodations and Del Mar resorts are breathtaking, although they tend to be quite pricey. One of the most exclusive Del Mar hotels is near the beach: it's the famous Aviara Four Seasons Resort in nearby Encinitas.

Rated among the best five-star resorts in the U.S., the "Grand Del Mar" offers stunning views, casual sophistication and unmatched service to create a memorable weekend at a Del Mar resort.

The San Diego County Fair comes to the Del Mar Fairgrounds each summer. Locals call it the Del Mar Fair - in fact, nobody calls it the San Diego County Fair. The location is just perfect as it's only a few blocks from the cooling breezes of the Pacific Ocean on those hot summer days. If you plan to visit the fair, be sure to make reservations at a hotel in Del Mar.

There are not many Del Mar beach hotels or Del Mar beach bed and breakfasts. One of the few is both intimate and romantic and costs under $175 a night. It's just 5 minutes up the coast highway from downtown Del Mar, a little boutique inn called the Del Mar Bed and Breakfast.

Coast Highway which runs through Del Mar is one of San Diego County's best cycling routes. Start your bike ride in Del Mar and head south to Torrey Pines or north to Solana Beach, Encinitas, Leucadia and Carlsbad. The Coast Highway goes right by one of only locations in the world where the highly endangered Torrey Pine tree grows - as a result, these trees are highly protected. Torrey pines can be seen from the coast highway growing along the sea cliffs beneath the Del Mar beach hotels.
