The iPod Wedding

By Beth Jacobson

Digital music players caused a bit of an uproar when they first arrived on the scene, as music moguls everywhere feared that without the need to purchase a hard copy of an album, consumers would enjoy artists' hard work for free, and the profits derived from an enormously lucrative industry would be depleted in a serious way. A few years on, it's obvious that the industry of music creation hasn't collapsed under the weight of such digital music players as the iPod, which holds a ninety percent share of the digital music player market. But now, it seems, another area of the music industry is in fear of its life.

The term "iPod wedding" has been thrown around recently, but as humorous as it may be, it is not referring to the idea of tying the knot with our beloved electronic device. In fact, the term has been referring to the new frugal trend which happens to be trading in the DJ or wedding band for our ipods as the new entertainer. Couples everywhere are celebrating their nuptials to a soundtrack provided by an ipod.

Due to the the rising cost of weddings every year, who can blame couples for using an ipod for entertainment?. To have a live band at your wedding, you may be looking at a price tag of around a thousand dollars, and around six hundred for a DJ. It can be quite challenging to find ways of cutting corners of a wedding's budget with the enormous cost of the ring and gown. It starts to make plenty of sense to use music and a device that you already own, and utilize the simple setup and huge capacity and variety of songs.

There is plenty of other advantages to using an ipod in lieu of a DJ. You can forget about worrying about awkwardness or bad tastes of a band or DJ and have complete control over the music you want to hear. Also, if you don't have an ipod already, you can get one for about have the cost of a DJ and be able to have it after the wedding for personal use. A wedding iPod can be a nice little gift for the couple to give themselves, allowing them to evoke wonderful memories of a happy day every time they use it.

An iPod is an ideal way to save money at any big occasion, and allows you to share the music you love with the people you care about. But while the iPod is a powerful tool, DJs and bands shouldn't throw in the hat just yet the iPod didn't kill the music industry and with the continuing popularity of live music at weddings, its unlike to ruin their business either.
