Plasma Cutters Are Really Nifty Tools For Cutting Metal

By Kenny Marcum

If you want to know what plasma cutters can be used for, the answer is very simple: cutting metal. It is also possible to gouge out metal using special nozzles, but mostly they are used to cut or trim metal to size. But at that job they do a really great job.

If you want to compare them to a band saw, they are much more mobile and handle lumps of metal better. You do not have to lug heavy metal sheets around either: you can usually work with them wherever they are needed. You just need a source of current - even a generator can work - to use them anywhere. This is one of their biggest advantages.

While these cutters are much like an arc welder in their basic concept, they do not use expensive welding rods. A source of compressed gas to form the plasma is needed, however. Like arc welders, they work at very high temperatures so they can carve through metal with ease. It is also possible to control the cutting very accurately, so very little extra work is required to achieve the perfect cut.

Their characteristics make them ideal for use in CNC applications. Special models are available specifically designed to partner such modern equipment. These have the advantage that they do not need an initial touch to start, so the tips last much longer.

While oxy-acetylene torches do a great job, the cuts possible are not so neat and controlled and they are also not suitable for CNC use. They cut more slowly because they use lower temperatures and are generally less powerful. Despite this, there are still applications where oxy-acetylene is the only option, although mostly this technology is steadily being replaced.

Because they are so useful for so many different applications, plasma cutters are usually your best choice for cutting metal. They look set to usurp the metal-cutting crown, in the same way as welding took over from riveting. Like all tool, especially those involving heat, they can be dangerous. But correct safety clothing and sensible safety awareness is really all that is needed to make them safe in operation
