Personal Defense You Did Not Bargain For

By Tammy Wilson

My friends and also I were at Joey's house, just about to go on what we referred to as our "budget trekking and camping getaway". We thought we were all packed as well as ready to go.

I then inquired, "What if a bear attacks all of us?" No person thought of this. However Joey got a bright idea. He got his mom's can of wasp spray. She uses it against wasps and bees while gardening. However wasp spray for self defense versus bears sounded like a terrible idea to the rest of us.

Joey contended that it was the "budget" thing to do. Besides, we did not have enough time to go out and acquire bear pepper spray or order this on the web. I argued that it was better to delay our getaway for a couple of hours. They are able to deliver real bear repellant within 24 hours.

The problem with wasp spray is that it is toxic. It kills bugs by targeting their nervous system. Professionals state wasp spray should not be used on humans or wild animals because it has not been tested for that reason.

I knew that bear spray is non-lethal and brings about no long term harm. It stops the bear in its tracks for a few moments, offering you sufficient time to flee. Bear spray shouldn't be used on people, either.

I ordered pepper spray for bears on the web. In the beginning, I would like the Mace bear repellent spray as it would cover the target in fog instead of spraying a steady stream. And it had a range of 30 feet.

However the best bear spray brand astounded me. It didn't feature anything combustible or detrimental to the ozone layer. This had a range of only 15 to 20 feet however it was the only bear spray approved by the EPA for all varieties, and was even recommended by the Alaska Science & Technology Foundation. Thus, this was what I bought.

We all ultimately left when my defense spray arrived the next day. And we could not quit kidding Joey for wanting to carry wasp spray for self defense versus violent bears.
