Abrasion resistant coating refers to a type of coating that does not scratch, peel off or corrode easily. They have strong cohesive and adhesive forces that allow them to make strong contact with the surfaces they are painted on. These strong forces help to prevent objects or surfaces from wearing as a result of mechanical activities. They shield against chemical reactions and friction related actions.

Mechanical wear and tear against which these paints protect are classified into four classes. These categories include abrasive, erosive, adhesive, and fatigue wear. Adhesive wear comes from contact between two metallic constituents. When such components move against each other, they generate friction which wears them. Engine bearings and landing gears are some of the components in which this type of tear occurs.

Abrasive tear results when objects like sand or metal are put under a load but slide on a surface. As they glide against the surfaces, they cut, gouge, or chip it. A common place where this type of wearing happens is in moving components. Parts wear uniformly and may generate some powder during the process.

Erosive kind of wear results from pressure in liquids. As components of an equipment or a machine move against pressure caused by a liquid, they are worn away over some period. Fatigue results from repetitive motion against surfaces. This motion may be against a liquid, gas, or solid. All the above mentioned sources of tear on objects and surfaces can be decreased by painting. Different coatings are appropriate for different surfaces and one needs to know which one is correct for their case.

Coatings have been modified for application on different kinds of surfaces. Among the surfaces they do best on include aluminum, fiber, wood, steel, melamine, and plastics among others. The item being painted should be sufficiently strong to withstand the sticky effect of the coats due to cohesive and adhesive forces.

There are various techniques used to apply these coats on objects and surfaces. Some of them comprise powder metalizing, plasma, plural spray, airless spray, and electrostatic. Modification and research has established that each method functions best on particular surfaces. Manufacturers will at times indicate the surface on which the paint works best. This specification must be observed well.

Abrasion resistant coating is very useful. They are made from combinations of fluoride and metal particles among other substances. They have several commercial, domestic, and industrial uses. In industries, they safeguard machinery, storage equipments, and production parts among others. In the vehicle industry, they are utilized to coat exterior and interior parts. Mining equipments and pulleys are coated by these products to offer protection. Application of abrasion resistant coatings aid minimize the rate at which components have to be replaced.
