Reasons to visit Airlie Beach, Great Barrier Reef in August

By John Nayler

Introduction Summary

The tourist season dawns on Airlie in the month of August. The weather is better and the days warmer.

August Atmosphere

The feeling around town is very much one of activity as the place warms up for the arrival of sailors and tourists. Festivals, Airlie Beach Race Week, Fun Race and Multi-rendezvous are part of an expanding schedule of events. All these things puts a spring in the step of the locals and is joined by the tourist influx. For people watching on, it would appear that the change almost happens overnight.

August Weather

Years of weather recording show that a magic wand is waved by the weather gods on the first of August. While Southern Australian locations get some of the coldest weather of the year, Airlie almost always enjoys light winds and warmer air temperatures for the first week of August, a change and then more light wind conditions. While the water temperature is only slightly on the rise, the warmer sun on the skin makes increased desire to swim.

August Prices

August is a time of higher occupancy with only small gaps between the festivals and sailing events. During the events and sailing, you can expect trouble finding available rooms. As expected this means that the prices for accommodation and experiences tends toward standard pricing. Is there is any advice, it is to book early and look for deals on longer stays. Fitting into gaps in availability will also tend to win favour for discounts.

August Risks

The water is turned the corner for temperature from the July low. This means that a wetsuit might still be desirable for extended time in the water, but also that the warnings about Irukandji and Box Jellyfish will be renewed. Regardless, there is little to worry about for the peak seasons are still months away. At all times you should follow the instructions from marine professionals.

Summary August

Airlie Beach is on its way to summer and this evident everywhere you look in August. Be sure to pack your bikini and sunblock and get set for a great time. There is plenty to do and plenty of people around so you are invited to come and enjoy the good times.
