Important Considerations When Buying Burglar Alarms Systems

By Allan Hatchell

For most people, those days when one could leave the home unlocked when going out or even hiding a spare key are long gone. In fact, it is downright dangerous and irresponsible. Most people had no choice other than to get used to the idea that they must take responsibility for the security of their families and their properties. It is almost unthinkable to live in a home where there are no burglar alarms systems.

Some people are of the opinion that it is the duty of the police to protect them and their properties. They argue that they pay taxes for this very purpose. While this argument may hold a measure of truth, the naked facts are that the law enforcement system is hopelessly understaffed. Crime is rampant in many areas and the police simply do not have the resources to pay attention to the safety of each individual, law abiding citizen.

In most cases there are no sirens that blare when an intruder is detected. Instead, a signal is sent through the telephone line or by radio to alert a central control room managed by a security company. They will notify the police or send out a patrol to investigate. The main drawback is that the time lapse between the trigger and the arrival of help may be too long.

Some people feel that a silent signal is counter productive. They want to know the very moment that an intruder is detected. In such cases a siren can be installed. The noise will hopefully attract the attention of the neighbors who should then call the authorities. The loud noise may cause the intruder to have second thoughts too.

It would be wise to also consider the simultaneous installation of fire alarms, smoke detectors and even sprinkling equipment when securing the home. In this way protection against threats other than humans can also be ensured. This added benefit normally adds only a small amount to the cost of a comprehensive home security package and is worth every penny in cases of disaster.

The purchase of security equipment deserves a great deal of care and circumspect. The supplier must be able to guarantee the equipment and they should employ specially trained and trustworthy staff that is able to install and maintain the equipment. If possible, it is best to choose a supplier that can provide further security measures such as outdoor video surveillance equipment at a later stage.

It is an unfortunate fact that the crime rate will not abate. In fact, it will become worse. Home owners must take steps to protect themselves and their families. Burglar alarms systems are no longer optional extras. They are essential in serving as the first line of defense against intruders and trespassers.
