By Steve Alexander

Portuguese cuisine is famous for using a range of spices with one of the most popular being piri piri. Dishes in the country are full of these small fiery chilli peppers that make the food rich and flavoursome, as well as things like cinnamon, garlic and saffron.

Piri piri chicken is one of the more well-known dishes in Portugal, and is very popular among tourists as well as locals. The sauce is widely used around the world now, but originated in Portugal. Used as a seasoning or marinade, it is made from crushed chillies predominantly, but also features lemon juice and zest, onion, garlic, pepper, salt, bay leaves, paprika and herbs such as basil, oregano and tarragon.

One of the more popular holiday destinations in Portugal is Albufeira in the Algarve region. The food here is very tasty with seafood being the main dish as fishing boats bring in large quantities of cod, monkfish, tuna, sardines, clams, prawns, oysters and squid every day. Barbecued fish is a speciality here, particularly the grilled sardines. The area also boasts many golf courses, bars, restaurants, a marina and an abundance of hotels and apartments.

Traditionally served with a sprinkling of cinnamon, rice popular is a popular desert, as well as caramel custard and custard tarts. Pastries are very common in Portugal, found in coffee shops and bakeries. Many are rich egg-based custards but others are chocolaty, creamy or made with marzipan and each town has a speciality. Selections of cheeses, mainly made with sheep or goat's milk, are usually available as well.

There are also lots of places to stay in Albufeira, including the Perola Do Algarve Aparthotel. The four star accommodation is located in the heart of the city, so there are vast amounts of cafes, restaurants, bars and shops in the nearby area. Albufeira also has a fishing village that is worth a visit, featuring traditional low fisherman's cottages and churches on the cobbled streets.
