Simple Mosquito Control Techniques And Methods

By Theresa Alvarez

While examining options for mosquito control Miami locals must remember that they are offered a public insect control service by Miami-Dade County. Aiding the public since 1935, the insect control division has been combating the insect swarms which overall raises the quality of life of area residents. In the warm sub-tropical area, nearly forty-five species of mosquito reside.

Those that are a considerable threat to the health of the public must be regulated quickly and regularly. Major diseases such as West Nile, Malaria and Encephalitis can be passed on through the insect causing many people to rapidly fall ill. Dusk and Dawn, DEET, Dress, and Drainage are the 'five D's' - methods stressed by the County for residents to use to fight the insect populations on their own property.

Truck spraying is the most common public method of prevention. By spraying out a light insecticide mist localized concentrations of bugs and eggs are killed off. During day hours spraying is not performed to avoid killing honey bees and other insects which may potentially be beneficial to local plants.

To reduce the presence of the insect make sure to clear gutters so that water may drain as it should. Keep doors and windows repaired so that no insects may find their way through cracks or tears in screening. Never leave standing water in untreated swimming pools, water crafts, and other containers for long periods of time.

Standing water and damp soil that may flood are perfect targets for insects to lay eggs in. These eggs can be hatched in less than a week and insects may quickly develop into adulthood. This problem can be avoided by simply preventing the ideal conditions needed for the eggs to survive.

The two times of day the blood-sucking insects are out and love to feast are at dusk and dawn. One can protect themselves from bites by putting on loose-fitting, bright, long-sleeved clothes and spare themselves from having the itchy red bumps later on. Repellents which contain DEET are known to be most effective in bite prevention. Sprays containing a 20-30% concentration of DEET are most widely used but may be harmful to babies.

When there is an issue calling for mosquito control Miami locals can simply pick up their home phone and dial 3-1-1 or report the problem online as an alternative. The matter will be handled by a specialist ready with a few questions to ask. A case number will be assigned to the resident and action will be taken as soon as possible after all required information is collected.
