Horology Takes The Limelight As The Fashion Accessories To Wear This Year

By William David Henry

As all the trend followers keep a wide eye on London, New York and Paris fashion weeks, those who care about time pieces are looking to a whole other global area. Even interior designers have their eyes on the catwalks. However, this has little influence on watches as fashion accessories: trend watchers in this area watch Geneva.

It's here that the most well respected horologists and designers show journalists their collections for the coming year. This particular show revealed some interesting new ideas for watches as well as some leaps back to previous eras. However, the overwhelming feeling was that of elegance.

One piece stole the show as the overriding favorite. It was a little square dialed number with a narrow face and black leather strap. Unusually, it was a hand wound piece, which horology fans will love for the nostalgia it brings. They will remember the age in which a time piece absolutely needed a year's worth of work to create.

Sports watches are in high demand these days among the public due to their many movements that supply complicated stop watch functions. However, the sports look doesn't fall in with today's elegant look, so this little gadget has been redefined in a more classy way. Because chronographs need to use two to five different mechanisms to maintain their movements, they tend to be bulky, and herein lay the problem for the designer.

He managed to make the chronograph narrower than it's ever been by creating a thin tourbillon. He also placed the micro-rotor on the actual dial of the piece rather than in the guts. This way, he retained functionality while supplying a model of extreme elegance.

There was a return to retro eras through the design of time pieces with a vintage flavor. The one thing all the pieces had in common was that they functioned mechanically. This brings the art of horology to the forefront of trends in fashion accessories.
