Choosing and making holiday centerpieces does not have to be a challenge. Sometimes the simplest and least inexpensive arrangements will have the biggest impact on guests. Just look around your home or business to assess what you already have and spend a few more dollars on creating magical and creative decorations that will draw admiring comments from your friends and family.

A simple plant such as a poinsettia or miniature evergreen tree inserted into a metallic pot and placed on a round, octagonal or square mirror is an eye catching and colorful display. At night, it can very dramatic when surrounded by votive or tea light candles. This centerpiece can be used for the lifetime of the plant. Live plants always look fresher and more appealing than artificial silk or plastic greenery.

Purchase inexpensive clear glass hurricanes at hobby stores or craft shops. Just place over a glittery pillar candle on an interesting glass plate or metallic charger and surround the entire arrangement with real or artificial evergreen or ivy or maybe even a small wreath. If it is an evening event, more votive candles can be added for extra impact.

Place a pillar candle in a round bubble bowl about the same height as the candle. Surround the base of the candle with holiday objects such as pine cones, green and red marbles or a profusion of small red and green ornaments. Even food items such as red hots, red and white mints or old fashioned Christmas ribbon candy can be utilized. Place this arrangement on a small round mirror for extra emphasis.

If you own several wide-mouth glass containers or small bubble bowls, they can be made into simple centerpieces in a matter of minutes. Fill each container with water up to a half inch from the top. Cut a flower bloom close to the top of the stem and float gently on top of the water. The flowers can be roses, mums, poinsettias, carnations or even daisies. Place one, two or three of these in the middle of each table or stagger on covered boxes on the buffet line. An evening alternative would be to use floating candles instead of flowers.

Smaller bubble bowls or wide-mouthed glass containers can be filled with water - fill about one-half inch away from the top - and float an elegant bloom in the liquid. Roses, zinnias, and spider mums are all good choices. You can add colored stones or marbles at the bottom of the containers for more color and for double impact, place the smaller container on a round, square or octagonal mirror.

If you or a friend own a collection of figurines such as angels, reindeer or elves, they can be utilized as table arrangements. Place in the middle of the table inside a holiday wreath and add votive candles around it for extra impact. If the items are small, arrange them in interesting groupings. They can be returned to their shelves when your occasion is over.

Holiday centerpieces do not have to be difficult. During this season, there are so many other pressing demands that it is reassuring that these decorations will be arranged so quickly and easily. Your family or guests will love them and be impressed by your creativity and skill.
