Recognizing Terms Related To Space MMO Games

By Aaliyah I. Herzog

The culture of space MMO games may seem odd to people who are not fans of this unique gaming genre but in reality that culture is growing rapidly as more and more players log on. The subscription fees alone that gaming studios earn for their MMORPG games, not to mention sales and ad revenue, makes this genre a real money maker for the industry. One of the special challenges that online games give to developers is that the gaming environment must stay active and fresh 24 hours a day in order to support players who are logging on in a variety of countries. Because these games are very different from console based RPG's that are made just for one player, a culture has developed online with its own terminology related to MMORPG's.

Gamers can easily be distracted away from a popular space MMO game if its content were to suddenly become dull, too predictable, or just overly cyclical; constant changes must be made. One of the manners in which they do this is by buffing and nerfing specific character classes in the game; character classes refer to the roles that each character assumes during game play. Buffing means that the stats of that class is improved, perhaps by changes that developers make to the characters' skills and abilities. Though certain classes are buffed, others are nerfed in that their skill sets are limited and some of their advantages are taken away through changes to the game.

Most space MMO games use a leveling system to help you track your progress through the game and gauge your character's abilities against those of other players. One of the manners in which this is accomplished is through grinding, which means fighting one enemy after another in an effort to gain experience and move up to a higher level. Any person who has played an MMORPG in the past can attest to the fact that grinding is a very normal part of getting a character through the beginning of a game and into the endgame levels.

Of course, no online game would be complete without the social element of an in-game chat interface that lets you talk to other players. Every game has its own chatting culture, including abbreviations that refer to locations, enemies, and items in the game those players are sure to learn as they play.

Because space MMO games form communities of gamers, it is only natural that they create their own culture as well. You are certain to understand the terminology of the gaming culture more as you become a part of that community.
