Will Justice Be Served Through Deepwater Horizon Settlement?

By Mathew Keith

It has been more than two years since the BP oil spill disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. However, the victims are yet to be compensated. It is not certain they will be paid fast or if the case will continue for a long time. Looking at the circumstances, the government set up Deepwater Horizon settlement program to assist the victims . There was another program before this one known as GCCF. But it was a total failure. The current program is believed to complete the work left behind by the earlier one.

Through the Deepwater Horizon settlement program, victims can file for claims in two categories. Economic claims and medical claims are those two. Anybody inhabiting the area within the oil spill may file for compensation provided that he or she has been affected. The worst affected places are the five states of Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. Victims residing in any of these five states are entitled to file for compensation through the program.

You can file for economic claims if you are engaged in the fishing industry or if your property got damaged due to the oil spill. The assessment is that numerous people in the fishing industry have had great losses in business as a consequence of the oil spill. Hence, if you have legitimate documents, you are qualified to get payment.

Regarding medical claims, you can file for compensation if you have suffered from any disease after the oil spill. If you were part of the clean up group after the oil spill, you are eligible to file for the claims too. With proper medical records, it is highly likely that you can get reasonable amount of compensation.

Many Deepwater Horizon settlement program centers are available in the country. You may engage a qualified and experienced lawyer for this case. You may apply for the claims after garnering all the legal papers. You are assured of obtaining the payment if you have a real and legitimate case. The Deepwater horizon settlement program will see to that.
