Have you found yourself wondering how people you know can prepare elaborate and delicious meals for their guests? You will be able to improve your cooking skills after reading this article.

Although it might feel great to impress your guests, avoid preparing a meal that you have never cooked before when entertaining someone important. Whether it is for friend, family or employer, you want to present your best effort. Cooking a dish you have already mastered will be sure to impress them most.

You can make a fat-free stew or soup by using fat-free soup stock or broth. Sticking with the low-fat goal, use lean meat and vegetables in the soup. Once it is ready to eat, place your soup in the fridge so it can chill. Any excess fat will harden and rise to the top. Simply skim off the hard fat now and throw it away. This helps you to remove hundreds of calories easily.

When preparing a salad for an outing, make sure it's layered in a smart way. Place the juiciest ingredients, such as tomatoes, on the bottom of the bowl, and settle the lettuce or other ingredients that are prone to wilting or sogginess on the top.

When preparing stews and soups, always remove excess fat. If you have prepared a soup or stew that has a lot of fat in it, try this trick. Allow the meal to become completely cool; any fat will slowly rise to the top. Place an ice cube atop a spoon and skim it over the surface of the soup or stew. Any fat will be attracted to the ice. Fat may add flavor but it also causes obesity.

Include some salt in the water when you make pasta. This will help season the pasta as it cooks. Salting after boiling your pasta will not give the same effect of absorption.

When cutting fresh herbs, sprinkle salt onto the cutting board. Doing this not only adds some flavor, but it also ensures that the herbs are right where they need to be, which is on the board. Do not over-salt by making sure you don't directly add any extra salt to the foods you're preparing. The salt that has been sprinkled onto the board, will also have the extra benefit of adding a little bit of extra flavor when it adheres to the herbs.

Avoid overcooking or undercooking a cake. If you are just beginning baking, you may have a hard time understanding how to adjust recommended oven temperatures to take variables such as elevation and humidity into account. This can cause your cake to bake strangely. Instead, test the cake periodically by inserting a toothpick into the middle. If the toothpick has no batter on it, then the cake has finished baking. If it does have batter on it, then put the cake back in the oven.

Spreading the mayonnaise evenly across the entire piece of bread results in a much better sandwich. A lot of people hurry and just slap the mayo on a sandwich right in the middle of the bread. When you take the time to spread them evenly across the entire slice of bread, you ensure that every bite contains maximum flavor.

When making a stir-fry dish, the meat needs to be cut into very thin slices, always on the bias. This may take some time and effort. Remove meat when firm but no longer frozen, and slice it 45 degrees across the grain.

Follow this tip for keeping large batches of pancakes or waffles warm until serving time. Make sure you preheat your stove to at least 300 degrees. Place your breakfast goodies on a platter, and leave them in the oven to stay warm until they are ready to eat.

As was previously noted, a good cook is always learning. Joy that comes from cooking comes not just from preparing a meal, but also from learning about various foods, and acquiring new cooking skills and techniques. It is also important to pass off your knowledge to others. Cooking is not just a skill to learn, but a gift that is meant to be shared with others.
